Serenade Rose, ridden by Glen Boss, set a stakes record when easily winning the Australian Jockey Club's $518,986 Australian Oaks (Aus-G1) on Wednesday at Royal Randwick.

Winner of the 2005 Victoria Oaks (Aus-G1) and the Arrowfield Stud Storm Queen Stakes (Aus-G1) on April 8 in her previous start, Serenade Rose rated well off the pace and one off the rail as Fancyfree took command early, at one stage opening a five-length lead.

Swinging around the home turn, Fancyfree was overtaken, eventually finishing last, and Serenade Rose was still off the bit. Climbing up the rise, the field spread out, Flora Danica briefly in the lead.

Serenade Rose picked up the bit 200 meters out and gathered pace, Flora Danica and Beauty Watch were refusing to give in, but Serenade Rose drew away, winning by 1¾ lengths while covering the 2,400 meters (11.93 furlongs) in 2:28.80. Her time eclipsed Triscay's stakes record of 2:30 set in 1991 en route to championship honors in her division.

Flora Danica, second in the Victoria Oaks and third in the Storm Queen, was runner-up, 1¼ lengths in front of third-place finisher Beauty Queen.

"She won like we expected her to," trainer Lee Freedman said of Serenade Rose. "I was always confident."

By Stravinsky out of Rose of Tralee, by Sadler's Wells, Serenade Rose was bred by Best Western Group Ltd., New South Wales, and is raced by a partnership. The winner of eight races in 14 career starts, she will now be sent for a spell.

On the Oaks undercard, 44-to1 outsider Proprietor, a stakes winner in Victoria last year, scrambled home in the $278,974 The Galaxy (Aus-G1) for two-year-olds and older.

Century Serb made a determined effort to lead all the way while Proprietor, ridden by Stephen Baster, raced well back.

Century Serb faded as they dashed up the rise, challengers coming from every direction. Media and Black Ink were there, but Proprietor, peeled off on the outside by Baster, surged forward to prevail by a neck from Media, who finished a neck in front of Black Ink. Time for the 1,100 meters (5.46 furlongs) was 1:03.18.

Proprietor is a six-year-old Belong to Me gelding who was bred by Toorak Park Stud Ltd., South Australia. Trained by Paul Perry, Broadmeadow, for a partnership that includes Global Bloodstock Syndication Ltd., he is out of Kiss in Vain, by Vain. With Wednesday's victory, his record improves to ten wins in 30 career starts.
