Tracy Farmer's favored Sun King overcame his outside post in a 14-horse field to easily win the $750,000 Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II) under Rafael Bejarano.
The Nick Zito-trained son of Charismatic picked up his third graded stakes victory of the year and moved well past the $1 million mark in career earnings. Sun King ran 15th in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and fourth in the Preakness (gr. I) earlier this year.

Juddmonte Farms' Three Valleys nosed out We All Love Aleyna in the $338,000 Del Mar Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIT) on the turf Sunday to record his first graded stakes victory in the United States.
Patrick Valenzuela frantically urged the 9-10 choice Three Valleys to victory when it appeared that We All Love Aleyna, who finally got through on the inside, might snatch it away. Pacesetter Wild Buddy was a half-length back in third in a determined effort at odds of 30-1.

Following the latest set of digital X-rays taken Thursday and a consultation with veterinarian Larry Bramlage, trainer Tim Ritchey was given the OK to bring Afleet Alex to the track Friday for his first jog since undergoing surgery to repair a slight hairline fracture. |

Organizations in the horse industry are organizing a major fundraising effort Oct. 8 for victims of Hurricane Katrina to be called "Racing to the Rescue Day."
Racetracks and horsemen's groups are signing on to participate in the effort and also to create on-site donation points for patrons to make contributions.

Trainer Barclay Tagg worked 2003 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Preakness (gr. I) winner Funny Cide for the first time in 22 days Monday morning. With assistant trainer Robin Smullen aboard, the 5-year-old gelding posted an easy four-furlong breeze in :51 over the sloppy main track. |
