(Thursday, March 10) We are now six weeks into the Bally's/Las Vegas Kentucky Derby Future Book Challenge (www.letitride.com/ballys) and it's time to step back and see what shape my stable is in right now.

As one of the so called "Track Experts" of the contest, handicappers can go head to head against me later in the contest, and if their stable out performs mine, they win a casino rate room package at Bally's in Las Vegas. Management at Bally's has informed me that it too many handicappers beat my stable, they are going to fly me out there for free so I can clean rooms and wax a few floors in between races. Here now is my stable through Week Six of the contest:
Dearest Mon (50/1): This colt disappointed in his last race and the Richard Violette trainee is probably my weakest member of the stable right now. My first round draft pick might be the worst since Brian Bosworth.
Bandini (75/1): I picked this son of FuPeg after a good looking allowance score on February 5, and the colt came back with a good effort in finishing in the runner up spot behind High Fly in the Fountain of Youth last weekend. Trained by Eclipse Award winner Todd Pletcher, the colt is now 15/1 on the morning line in the second leg of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager released this week. Next stop is likely going to be the Florida Derby. The 75/1 is starting to look real good on this guy.
Scipion (100/1): Gets a good test this weekend in the Louisiana Derby. I really liked his late kick winning the Risen Star in his last start and he is in good hands with trainer Patrick Biancone. By A.P. Indy out of a Strawberry Road mare, he is now 30/1 on the morning line for this weekend's Kentucky Derby Future Wager.
Noble Causeway (100/1): It took Nick Zito four tries to get this colt his maiden win, but he had to make the trainer happy with a good looking allowance win on March 5 in good time. That dropped him to 20/1 on the morning line for the Future Wager this weekend. By Giants Causeway out of a Seeking the Gold mare, his next start may stamp him a ticket to Louisville.
Andromeda's Hero (50/1): Are you pickling up on a theme here? This colt is another runner from the Zito barn to enter my stable. This colt is not getting the headlines (at least yet) compared to his stable mates, but the colt is well bred and the 50/1 price was too good to pass up.
High Fly (25/1): Yep, another colt from the Zito barn. Half of my eggs are currently in one basket. And who knows, maybe I'll add Sun King next week. Zito took over the training duties of High Fly after a third place finish in the Holy Bull while under the care of Bill White. The colt came back with a smart looking win in the Fountain of Youth last weekend. The barn is now fully stocked for Derby Day. But let's not forget Zito had a barn full of promising runners last year about this time only to see each one fall by the wayside with an assortment of ailments and setbacks.
At some point we have a few logical contenders we need to add to our stable, but the prices are on the light side. Declan's Moon was a good looking winner last out in the Santa Catalina at Santa Anita on Saturday, but his price is very short right now to consider playing two months before racing's biggest day.
Afleet Alex looked sensational winning the Mountain Valley Stakes at Oaklawn last weekend. Tim Ritchey is pointing the colt to the Rebel Stakes. The colt will likely run into Rockport Harbor in that race. Trained by John Servis, Rockport Harbor will make his three year old debut in that race and try to follow a similar path set last year by the Servis trained Smarty Jones.
There is still time to find a generous price on a Derby contender, but the clock is ticking. I'm hoping I got my prices just in the Nick of time.
