Barbaro update - 2006/09/27 23:00 I just found this:

Steady as he goes, Barbaro delights vets

Continuing to progress steadily, Kentucky Derby (G1) winner BARBARO (Dynaformer) is pleasing his veterinarians at the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital's Intensive Care Unit. The bay colt, who became laminitic and lost more than 80 percent of his hoof while recovering from injuries suffered in the May 20 Preakness S. (G1), has grown roughly 18 millimeters of new hoof growth in the heel area. But he is not out of the woods yet.

"It has to grow at least three times that, which could take more than six months," Chief Surgeon Dr. Dean Richardson said. "It's a very gradual process; the bottom of his foot has to completely heal as well."

Barbaro remains comfortable, taking 30-to-40 minute visits outside every day if the weather is appropriate.

"He definitely enjoys his daily excursions outside to walk and graze," Dr. Richardson says.

Doctors plan to change his cast in roughly two weeks
