Whats the best aproach to wager a big stakes race? - 2005/11/05 19:25 Good question. In handicaps, the racing secretary gives you a little help by assigning weights for each horse. So, you have a point of reference. I've noticed in huge races, like the Breeders' Cup, hype gets in the way sometimes and pace plays are overlooked. Perfect example was Intercontinental this year who was the speed and was totally overlooked. One thing that is also very hard to figure out is when a real good horse comes back off a layoff and makes the first start of the season. Everybody knows that likely sprint is not what connections are aiming for, with so much money down the line to be won, but sometimes class horses win anyway despite looking like false favorites. It's an age old question.

Whats the best aproach to wager a big stakes race? - 2005/11/09 09:16 I guess experience is the one that shows tips and ways of betting. In my case, I'm new at betting horses, so I'm getting to learn the betting systems.

Whats the best aproach to wager a big stakes race? - 2005/11/10 14:00 Boxing 5 horses at $2 a pop cost $40. Not sure there is value there unless you knock out the first and 2nd choices.

Whats the best aproach to wager a big stakes race? - 2005/11/11 16:30 Either play the favorite or find a huge longshot. My experience says always look at longshots.

Whats the best aproach to wager a big stakes race? - 2005/11/21 06:00 The question is not so much what to look for, but what is missing. Although I don't do very well on these big races, I tend to lean towards long shots. These are usually horses that have back class - ran great races last year or earlier in the meet and whose form is off. Then I look for the angle that tells me they're ready to improve whether it be they like the course, third race off layoff, distance, good works, track condition etc.

At the end of the year you have hot young horses running against old timers. I take the old timers. For example Riskaverse hit at $40+. For example Wend, a three year old showed great form but could not take the classy older ones.

My overall philosphy is it's not the races you win, it's the winnings you gain and much rather loose four in a row and catch a 20/1 shot over hitting three out of four chalks

Whats the best aproach to wager a big stakes race? - 2005/11/21 16:25 Good strategy Spyder. I had a friend years ago, he was one of the best gamblers I have ever met and he always went for the jugular. If it was close between a couple of horses, he went for the bigger price and he's a pro these day in SoCal.

Whats the best aproach to wager a big stakes race? - 2005/12/02 18:21 when I said box 5 horses was referring to
the super dont know if it has a favorable
r.o.i. or not but at certain tracks possibly
In the old days (imo) ten years ago or
more the Track Handicappers who assigned
the weights were more proficient in the
big stakes races but now it appears to be
not so
Very few real good systems around these days
just too much info out there for all to see
Bottom line is whats the R.O.I.

Whats the best aproach to wager a big stakes race? - 2005/12/16 17:09 Solid Eddy. Nothing really means nothing unless you are told to bet everything in the pocket and the horse wins. The measuring stick is how much you win.
