By Brian Mulligan In this day and age of athletes staying a season too long or making that comeback, see Vinny Testaverde, or of a coach going through the motions, think Larry Brown, it’s refreshing to see a trainer go the route of former Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcels and get out while the getting is good. For a trainer who just took out her license to condition in 1999, Laura de Seroux has had a lasting impact on the game. The former exercise rider for the legendary Charlie Whittingham learned a thing or two from the ‘Bald Eagle’ and has now hung up the boots as the only female to train a Horse of the Year. |

By John Pricci Saratoga Springs, NY--The Tampa Bay Derby changed everything. Suddenly, Nobiz Like Shobiz is not the brightest blip on the Kentucky Derby radar screen. That distinction belongs to Street Sense, the juvenile champion of 2006, who, according to jockey Calvin Borel, is “twenty lengths better than he showed [winning the Tampa Derby].” That’s why we love athletes. A fresh colt survives a textbook stretch duel, passing an eyeball-to-fetlock war in his first start of the year, doing so in stakes and track record time and still has, according to his rider, another four full seconds left in the tank! But, hey, Derby Fever is a particularly virulent strain. |

By Mike Dempsey It has to be devastating to have a promising stakes winning three year old get injured less than two months before the Kentucky Derby. Three time Eclipse Award winning trainer Todd Pletcher has taken one of his most promising three year olds off the Triple Crown Trail. Ravel, winner of the Grade 3 Sham Stakes, was being pointed toward the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, but it was discovered the colt has a possible fracture in his left front cannon bone. |

Padding your Bankroll

By Mike Dempsey Theyareatthepost.com handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours. He will feature at least one Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers. Don't miss Wednesday's report where Michael will keep you up to date with track bias reports for the major circuits.
Quaderna ran fifth as my top pick in Wednesday's featured race of the day. She ws let go at 22/1 and she came with a bold five wide run around the far turn and ran out of gas. We only managed a pair of the winners on our modest Pick 4 ticket at the Big A. Not a good day for padding our bankroll.
Let's look for better results today. We have a shot of landing a good exacta in today's featured race of the day. Yes, a bottom level maiden claimer. Hey, money is money.

Thank goodness spring is here. Racing was canceled from Friday through Sunday in New York which gave us a few less opportunities to pad our bankroll. I think we have a good chance of knocking down a good exacta at Gulfstream Park today in our featured race of the day. We'll also try to take down the late Pick 4 at the Big A with a modest $36 ticket.

By Joe Takach 3---FRACTIOUS LOSERS Paddock handicappers know that unruly and uncontrollable runners are always a big time “no-no”. Rather than delve into the many possible reasons for this negative behavior that could include sickness, fear, anger, lameness, legal or illegal drugging, time would be better spent addressing the needed energy lost and the many signs of fractiousness that are clearly evident in the paddock and the post parade. |

By Brian Mulligan The claiming game in America is still the nuts and bolts of the industry with probably about 75% of the races written for claimers and although it is still all about equine poker, there are subtle differences in the claiming world today that bettors need to be aware of or they will limit their action severely. |

By John Pricci Hallandale Beach, Fla.--Anytime good horses are led down the ramp into the walking ring at Gulfstream Park for a big race, the atmosphere resembles that of a prize fight. And like a big bout, the champion usually is the last to enter the ring. At the racetrack, this tradition is less about drama than it is about taking an edge. The shorter the time spent in the ring or paddock is less time for things to go wrong. |
