By Patrick Hagan of the Daily Schwt Being well-versed in wagering on races contested over synthetic racing surfaces, I consider myself at an advanced polylevel. My five-figure Pick Six score (written as part of an exclusive article here 2 months ago) at Hollywood Park on April 28th attests to that. |

By Joe Takach No picture of correct walking in the paddock can be complete without taking note if a horse is walking wide in the front. Walking wide in the front implies either tenderness or just plain tiredness. |

By www.FullCardReports.com Saratoga's opening week will present a strong series of stakes headed by the 80th running of the $750,000 Grade 1 Whitney Handicap for 3-year-olds and up at nine furlongs on July 28th, the first Saturday of the meet. The Whitney will be the top race on an 11-race live race card that features three other stakes races at Saratoga that are part of the new Breeders’ Cup Challenge series: the $250,000 Grade 1 Go for Wand Handicap for fillies and mares at nine furlongs, the $500,000 Grade 1 Diana for fillies and mares at nine furlongs on the turf, and the $250,000 Grade 2 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap for 3-year-olds and up at six furlongs. It’s a “Win and You’re In” format, as the winners of these races will automatically qualify, respectively, for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Breeders’ Cup Distaff, Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, and Breeders’ Cup Sprint that will be held at Monmouth Park on Saturday, October 27th. |

By www.FullCardReports.com RAGS TO RICHES, who became only the third filly to win the Belmont Stakes when she beat Preakness winner CURLIN last month, will not run in Saturday’s 91st edition of the $300,000 Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks, trainer Todd Pletcher announced Monday morning. The filly sent up a red flag when she missed a scheduled work Sunday morning and Monday's announcement that she was running a slight fever did not come as a big surprise to those of us who spend a great deal of time at Belmont Park. |

By Joe Takach Polysurfaces are the new question marks in racing and wreaking havoc on some handicappers. Last November Southern California handicappers were introduced to a new polysurface at Hollywood Park. We have just completed the second Hollywood Park polysurface meet and Del Mar will introduce their new polysurface at the opening of their 2007 meet. (Might also mention that Santa Anita goes synthetic in late September, which will complete the new Southern California “polytrinity”). |

By Joe Takach 10---WALKING SHORT (continued) I could never overemphasize the importance of walking correctly. It is the very first thing that I evaluate with every single horse the instant that they walk into the paddock from the detention barn. The paddock isn’t crowded with handicappers yet because they are still on the front apron cashing winners, buying tickets for the upcoming race, scratching their heads in total disbelief that they have to throw away another mutuel ticket, or mumbling something at their losing rider as he comes back to the unsaddling area. |
