By Mike Benitez from The Daily Schtw When Hollywood Park failed to have turf racing at their fall meet in 2005, they installed a new turf course that was first used with the start of the spring/summer meet of 2006. At that juncture, the staff of the DAILY SCHTW (Daily Southern California Horses To Watch) decided to track all turf sires by distance won, the total numbers of starts, and their specific win percentage. On the following pages you will find Hollywood’s raw sire data from April 2006 thru the conclusion of their fall meet on December 18, 2006.
All sires having an offspring that made a start over the new Hollywood turf course are noted along with wins. Distances are broken down into the following three categories: 1. Sprints (5F to 6F) 2. Routes (8F to 10F) 3. Marathons (12F) Why do we use "track-specific" breeding versus universal turf ratings? That’s simple! Every turf course is quite different in many aspects. Universal ratings merely mix all the turf courses together and the data is very misleading. Just because a sire throws a ton of winners in New York, that’s positively not a reason to favor him over any of the turf courses on the major Southern California circuit. Let’s compare Santa Anita and Hollywood Park. „h Santa Anita has a completely different type of grass than does Hollywood and their climate is completely different. Santa Anita is held during the winter months into the early spring. Hollywood runs during the fall and when Santa Anita closes in late April, they begin anew for the balance of spring and summer months thru the end of July and the opening of Del Mar. „h Santa Anita has a hillside turf course that requires a horse to make four different lead changes. Hollywood Park can start a race out of a chute that funnels into the main course. „h Hollywood has a bigger turf course since its cushion track is a mile and an eighth oval, whereas Santa Anita’s main course is only a mile in circumference. „h The turf "rails out" are not identical. Santa Anita sets the "rails out" at 8, 15, 24. and 30 feet. Hollywood Park’s "rails out" positions are at 10, 15 and 20 feet. See what happens when just comparing two different turf courses on the same circuit? Try to imagine all the other combinations of unique idiosyncrasies from each turf course across America! Universal ratings ignore the 4 differences stated above between Hollywood and Santa Anita by lumping every turf course together to create their "numbers". The "track-specific" sire ratings collected by the DAILY SCHTW look absolutely nothing like anyone’s "universal sire ratings" simply because they are not diluted by 50 other turf courses nationwide. It isn’t our intention to interpret the data for you. That’s why we’ve provided our "proprietary data" in its raw form. This way every handicapper can personally weigh the relevance of "track-specific" breeding in each race with other pertinent handicapping factors they feel essential.
