It has to be devastating to have a promising stakes winning three year old get injured less than two months before the Kentucky Derby. Three time Eclipse Award winning trainer Todd Pletcher has taken one of his most promising three year olds off the Triple Crown Trail. Ravel, winner of the Grade 3 Sham Stakes, was being pointed toward the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, but it was discovered the colt has a possible fracture in his left front cannon bone.

3---FRACTIOUS LOSERS Paddock handicappers know that unruly and uncontrollable runners are always a big time “no-no”. Rather than delve into the many possible reasons for this negative behavior that could include sickness, fear, anger, lameness, legal or illegal drugging, time would be better spent addressing the needed energy lost and the many signs of fractiousness that are clearly evident in the paddock and the post parade.

The claiming game in America is still the nuts and bolts of the industry with probably about 75% of the races written for claimers and although it is still all about equine poker, there are subtle differences in the claiming world today that bettors need to be aware of or they will limit their action severely.

Energy levels and pre-race attitudes are very easy to spot over any racetrack feed.

 

Even if you only get the minimal “5 second glimpse” of every horse in the post parade via your racetrack feed, runners simply can’t hide their individual energy levels. They aren’t stage actors who can feign either high or low intensity. What you see is usually what you get.
