Be careful what you wish for Larry Jones. Lest you forget that you and your owner of Hard Spun dumped Mario Pino after the Preakness because he moved too early into a hot pace.

 

It was a knee jerk reaction for Spun’s new pilot, Garrett Gomez, to try to take a little hold and wait till the optimum time to pounce.

In a New York Minute

It won’t be a New York minute, maybe more like 2 and a half minutes, and the winner of the Belmont Stakes Saturday will not come close to matching Secretariat’s 2:24 record, but the race still comes up interesting especially if Curlin doesn’t bring his A game.

 

What Curlin did in Baltimore is seldom seen. Once horses get passed, they very seldom have the heart or the inclination to get back on the bit and re-rally.

The Iron Tin Man

The Tin Man in a character in the fictional Land of Oz but the equine machine trained by Richard Mandella is no nuts and bolts creation, but an assassin that is still whipping butt and taking names at the venerable age of 9.

 

Last weekend he took the Grade 1 Shoemaker to add to his reputation and be one of the very few of his age to accomplish that feat in such a high thought of event. And he didn’t beat any cupcakes. This was a very good field with a lot of speed in there to discourage the champ using one of his most potent assets.
